Support for homeless people in Berlin

People who are threatened to be or are homeless are often in an unstable situation in life. There are many reasons for homelessness; losing loved ones, unemployment or other important life events.

In Berlin there is a broad network of support for people in those situations. Here, we point out some of these projects:

Berliner Stadtmission (Berlin City Mission):

The Berlin City Mission centre is located in Lehrter Strasse at the main station station. It was founded over 100 years ago and has been committed to support people of different ages in different situations, including homeless people.

There is a wide range of options led by the City Mission for people who do not have a home, among those advice how to deal with the current living situation, a medical outpatient clinic, day care centers that supply food or clothing, help that focusses on cold seasons, and to support on all topics related to independent living.

Berliner Kältehilfe:

The Berliner Kältehilfe is an organisation that unites and coordinates various organizations and initiatives supporting people without a home. Overall, they offer counseling, emergency accommodation, food distribution, night cafes, and day care centers. In winter, the cold aid organizes a Kälte- and Wärmebus that address people living on the street directly.

On their homepage, a number of telephone numbers are available, for example for the buses or a helpline (acute help on site), as well as lists with other daily offers for homeless people. If you want to get involved, you can also register new initiatives here.

Berliner Obdachlosenhilfe e.V. (Homeless Aid)

The Berlin Homeless Aid Association offers support on a variety of places in Berlin on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. They distribute hot food and drinks as well as clothing. The association also offers social counseling for the homeless.

The program publicly represents the interests of those people without a home, and it is involved in various campaigns, including "Mobility for All" (no fines for riding BVG without a valid ticket) or dealing with housing and vacancies.
